The History of the Building
In 1961, after the Everson Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees
unanimously selected world-renowned architect I.M. Pei to
design their new art museum, Pei attended a Trustees meeting
to share his vision for the future. Pei viewed museums as
the cultural center of a community and believed that a
successfully designed museum could significantly improve
a community’s quality of life. Construction on the Everson
began in 1965, and the Museum officially opened to the
public on October 27, 1968 to great critical acclaim.
Dubbed “a work of art for other works of art,” the building,
with its four massive cantilevered galleries, poured-in-place
concrete structure, and bush-hammered exterior, was viewed
as a monumental work of abstract sculpture.
