Angela Fraleigh, based in New York City and Allentown, co-opts the techniques, media, and styles of the European Old Masters to create monumental paintings of female figures that explore social constructs of gender, power, and identity. Combining abstraction and realism, her visually seductive and complicated paintings reflect on art history, literature, and popular culture. For the Everson, Fraleigh presents new paintings inspired by works in the Everson’s collection, women of the Arts and Crafts movement and important female figures in the history of Central New York.

WaterCRAFT combines quilts and model boats in a celebration of creativity and ingenuity inspired by artist Marie Lorenz’s journey along the historic Erie Canal. The exhibition features original model boats designed and built by community members and contemporary quilts by some of the finest quilters in the region that explore and interpret the theme of water. The culmination of Marie Lorenz’s journey along the Erie Canal and the Hudson River in the summer of 2016, this multi-media exhibition brings together new works along with research, documentation and materials from the voyage.

For over a decade, Marie Lorenz has been exploring and documenting the waterways of New York City in boats she designs and builds as part of her ongoing project Tide and Current Taxi. On July 1, Lorenz extends the project, ambitiously traveling from Buffalo (with a launch at the Albright Knox Gallery) to Albany along the historic Erie Canal and onto New York City via the Hudson River (arriving at the High Line). Accompanied by a series of passengers with particular perspectives on the waterway, Lorenz will make stops and presentations at historic sites, museums, and other canal corridor locations. The project will culminate with a multi-media exhibition and series of programs at the Everson in the fall, bringing together newly-created objects as well as research, documentation, and materials from the voyage. This project is commissioned by the Everson, with support from CNY Arts, NYSCA, etc. Project partners include the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and Erie Canal Corp., Albright Knox Gallery, Memorial Art Gallery, Erie Canal Museum and Sculpture Space.

New York-based artist Kate Gilmore combines humor and physical endurance in her feminist-inspired works to create strikingly memorable performances and videos. Gilmore’s performances typically showcase the artist or other women femininely dressed and engaged in monotonous, physically arduous, and often rather inane tasks that call out and disrupt gender stereotypes. For the Everson, Gilmore presents a selection of video performances spanning more than a decade as well as a new temporary sculptural installation created specifically for the Everson Community Plaza. Linking the indoor and outdoor components, performers will activate the public sculpture throughout the summer.

The Everson Biennial has been an important platform for contemporary art by New York State artists since its inception in 1974, offering an outlet for creative visual expression and facilitating lively conversations about both what contemporary art is and what it has the power to become. Kindred Beasts continues this tradition by presenting a carefully selected group of eight artists whose work focuses on the use of fiber and clay. Each artist interprets the medium in unique and innovative ways, while remaining deeply engaged with tradition and respectful of the past. Representing six counties across the state, the artists are: Joe Fyfe, Jeffrey Gibson, Sarah Hewitt, Liz Lurie, Matt Nolen, Sarah Saulson, Bobby Silverman and Linda Sormin.

In 1965 the Museum of Modern Art opened The Responsive Eye, a landmark exhibition which featured works by 100 modern artists who used abstract forms to examine how different shapes, patterns and colors could affect the eye of a viewer. Often called “Op Art” due to their relationships to the study of optics and optical illusions, these works appear to move, shimmer, or vibrate despite the fact that they are stationary. This exhibition revisits the work of four of the artists included in the seminal survey: Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Frank Stella and Victor Vasarely, as well as their Latin contemporary Jesús Rafael Soto.

Inaugurated in 1932 at the Everson, the Ceramic National juried exhibitions helped shape the course of ceramic history and launched the careers of many notable ceramic artists. This special exhibition showcases more than 70 pieces drawn from the Ceramic National exhibitions, all of which are now part of the Everson’s acclaimed collection.

Adelaide Alsop Robineau, a major figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and today considered one of America’s preeminent art potters, is known for her exquisite porcelains decorated with intricate carvings and crystalline glazes. This exhibition features more than seventy of Robineau’s works, a number of which were part of the Everson’s original purchase of Robineau’s porcelains in 1916, an acquisition that set the course for the Museum’s long-term commitment to collecting ceramics. On display in the exhibition are many visitor favorites, including the famous Scarab Vase, believed to be Robineau’s masterpiece.

From 19th century Parisian boulevards to late 20th century scenes of downtown Syracuse, the images included in this exhibition explore the many diverse aspects of life in the city: busy shopfronts and beach boardwalks, crowded fairs and quiet parks and streets teeming with or devoid of human presence. Featuring over 60 works by 22 photographers, the exhibition includes examples by such internationally known figures as Eugène Atget, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Robert Doisneau and Garry Winogrand, as well as photographers who have worked locally, such as Toren Beasley, Michael Davis and Bruce Gilden.
